Hialeah Police Leverage Social Media to Nab Carjacking Suspect from Orlando

A swift investigation utilizing social media intelligence led Hialeah police to the arrest of Axel Lopez Gonzalez, 23, of Davenport, Florida, in connection with a violent November robbery and carjacking. Gonzalez was taken into custody by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office on December 18th and subsequently booked into a Miami-Dade jail on Friday, facing charges of armed robbery and attempted armed kidnapping.

Violent Encounter at Pura Vida Hialeah

The incident unfolded on the morning of November 16th after the victim, following an evening with a friend in Miami Beach and North Miami, drove to the Pura Vida Hialeah apartment complex at 3051 W. 16th Ave. to drop off his companion. Upon arriving, the victim accompanied his friend to his seventh-floor apartment, where an “unknown male” answered the door. As the pair returned to the victim’s vehicle – a 2014 Toyota 4-Runner – to retrieve the friend’s belongings, the situation rapidly escalated.

Ambush and Pursuit

According to an arrest warrant, the victim was “ambushed” by multiple armed suspects. He was subjected to a brutal assault, including being repeatedly struck and pistol-whipped in the head, before being forcibly dragged from the driver’s seat to the rear of the vehicle as the assailants attempted to rob him. The victim managed to escape, jumping from the rear door as the suspects pursued him to a dead end.

One of the suspects, speaking in Spanish, demanded the victim’s compliance, stating, “You have to come with us.” Fearing for his life, the victim surrendered his belongings. “The subject ultimately fled the scene on foot when a passerby intervened and (the victim) asked for help calling the police,” Detective Tayron Vilorio of the Hialeah Police Department wrote in the warrant.

Digital Trail Leads to Suspect

Authorities recovered the victim’s cellphone along Okeechobee Road near West Seventh Avenue. Crucially, an Apple AirTag pinged near the crime scene at 1500 W. 29th St., leading police to the abandoned SUV in a parking lot. Surveillance footage proved instrumental, capturing a suspect armed with a black and red rifle, wearing a black facemask, a distinctive black hoodie emblazoned with the word “MUHAMMAD” in large white letters, black pants, and black shoes with light-colored laces.

The investigation broadened to include three vehicles linked to the robbery: a Mercedes-Benz SUV, a Chevrolet Suburban, and a BMW X3. While the first two were rentals, the BMW provided a vital lead – it was registered to a woman in Orlando. A subsequent database search revealed a business connection between the Orlando woman and another individual, who was quickly identified as a suspect through a distinctive neck tattoo visible in a public Instagram photo that matched surveillance footage. Further examination of that suspect’s Instagram profile led to the identification of another individual with visible tattoos.

A breakthrough came when investigators examined the Instagram followers of the second suspect and discovered Lopez Gonzalez, who displayed a distinctive hand tattoo also observed in the surveillance footage. The victim subsequently identified Lopez Gonzalez and other suspects from a photo lineup.

Ongoing Investigation and Current Status

As of Monday morning, it remained unclear whether any other suspects were in custody. However, Lopez Gonzalez is currently being held without bond at the Metrowest Detention Center, facing serious charges. This case underscores the increasing importance of social media and digital forensics in modern criminal investigations, demonstrating how law enforcement can effectively leverage online platforms to track down suspects and bring them to justice.
