High Court Cancels Bail of 15 Karur DMK Members in Assault Case against Income Tax Officials

Madurai – The High Court has canceled the bail granted to 15 members of the Karur faction of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) who were allegedly involved in assaulting Income Tax officials. This decision comes in response to a petition filed by the Revenue Department seeking the cancellation of the bail.

The incident occurred when the house of Minister Senthil Balaji’s brother, Ashokumar, was raided by income tax authorities in Karur. Following the raid, a complaint was filed against the DMK alleging that they had attacked the Income Tax officials and snatched important documents. The police promptly registered a case and arrested several DMK members.

However, in the subsequent court proceedings, 15 DMK members were granted bail by the Karur court. This sparked outrage among the Income Tax Department, leading them to file a petition in the High Court urging the cancellation of the bail.

Yesterday, the petition was heard by Judge Ilangovan in the High Court, where the Income Tax Department argued for revoking the bail. They claimed that several vital items, including two warrant copies, government stamps, and crucial government documents related to the case, were taken away by the DMK members during the assault. Furthermore, the information on a pen drive was reportedly destroyed, and jewelry and property securities worth one crore rupees were also taken. The Department deemed these actions as heinous crimes, warranting the revocation of the bail.

Accepting the argument put forth by the Income Tax Department, Judge Ilangovan canceled the bail granted by the lower court to those arrested for assaulting the Income Tax officials. The order stipulated that all individuals whose bail had been canceled must surrender before the Karur Chief Criminal Magistrate within three days. At that time, they can file bail petitions, and the Karur court will prioritize hearing those pleas.

The decision by the High Court to cancel the bail has sparked discussions across the political spectrum. It remains to be seen how the Karur DMK members will respond to the court’s orders and what impact this development might have on the ongoing investigation into the alleged assault on Income Tax officials.
