A highway collapse in southern China has killed 36 people, according to a new report released by state media on Thursday.
As of 5:30 am Thursday (9:30 pm GMT Wednesday), “36 people were dead and 30 were injured,” the Xinhua news agency reported, adding that the lives of those injured were not in danger.
Twenty vehicles were “trapped” when part of the road between Meizhou city and Dabu county, Guangdong Province, collapsed around 2:10 am on Wednesday (1810 GMT Tuesday), killing a total of 54 people, it showed. Chine Nouvelle.
Public broadcaster CCTV said the collapse was a “natural geological disaster” caused “under the influence of continuous heavy rain”.
The industrial province of Guangdong, whose capital is Guangzhou, has been hit by heavy rains in recent weeks, causing major floods and landslides. For the past few days, the torrential rain has been much heavier than usual for this time of the year just before the monsoon season.
“The more severe climate change increases the probability of heavy rains only in the summer months,” Yin Zhijie, head of hydrological forecasting at China’s Ministry of Water Resources, said on China’s national radio.
