Escombe Avenue Man Survives Harrowing Hijacking and Kidnapping Ordeal
A Brakpan, South Africa, man experienced a terrifying evening after being abducted by a group of hijackers following a routine trip to the shops. The incident, which occurred on October 6th, highlights a growing concern over sophisticated criminal activity targeting residents in the area.
An ordinary evening took a dark turn for the Escombe Avenue resident when, after parking his silver-colored BMW 320d in his yard around 19:00, he was confronted by three armed men. According to police details,as the victim prepared to secure his property,the trio demanded his car keys.He complied with their demands without resistance, and all three individuals entered the vehicle, forcibly taking him with them.
The victim was positioned in the back seat, under the direct watch of one hijacker, while the other two occupied the front. During the drive, the perpetrators escalated their demands, seizing the victim’s cellphone and compelling him to unlock it and access his banking request. They then coerced him into making three separate money transfers, totaling nearly R5,000. A senior official stated that the hijackers maintained communication with an accomplice throughout the ordeal via phone.
The group later stopped at an undisclosed location, where a fourth individual joined them, before resuming their journey. The situation intensified when the victim’s face was covered with a black hat at another stop. despite exiting the vehicle, one of the hijackers repeatedly returned to pressure the victim for the iCloud PIN associated with his iPhone.
After being forced out of the vehicle and left unattended, the victim discovered his BMW was missing upon the hijackers’ return. They then transferred him into a Volkswagen Polo and drove him to a remote, bushy area. There, they instructed him to flee and not look back. Heeding their command,the victim ran until he reached a nearby housing complex in an unidentified location,where he was finally able to seek assistance.
In addition to the stolen BMW, the hijackers also absconded with the victim’s iPhone, a laptop, and personal work belongings. Cases of hijacking and kidnapping have been opened and are currently under investigation by the Brakpan SAPS.
