Hilary Duff on New Album, Past Pressures, and Reclaiming Her Narrative

nearly a decade after her last studio album, Hilary Duff is poised for a musical reintroduction, reflecting on her journey and the evolution of her artistry. In a recent interview with Variety’s “Know Their Lyrics” video series,Duff discussed the inspiration behind her upcoming single,”Mature,” and her forthcoming album,”luck … or something,” set for release on February 20,2026.

Duff described her new single as a reflection on a past relationship, explaining that “Mature” is “a conversation talking to the past version of myself and looking back at that time with the maturity of a formed grown adult.” She emphasized a desire to reconnect with her fanbase, stating, “People have been following my career and having a connection, and I think I was just realy ready to reintroduce myself to them.”

The album’s title, “luck … or something,” originates from a lyric in the track “Adult Size Medium,” which explores themes of self-discovery and the pressures of fame. Duff acknowledged the public’s fascination with her ability to navigate childhood stardom, noting the frequent question: “How are you the normal one, and how did you escape all of these childhood stardom things?” Her response, she shared, is a combination of fortunate circumstances and personal agency: “Some of it was luck, and some of it was me.”

Duff was deliberate in her return to music, waiting for a moment that felt both authentic and meaningful. “I never wanted to jump the gun and do something that didn’t totally feel right,” she said. “This moment in time and the people that I’ve surrounded myself with, it felt really right.”

This new project represents a significant departure from the uncertainty duff felt surrounding her 2015 album, “Breathe In. Breathe Out.” She candidly admitted that she hadn’t yet achieved the creative clarity she possesses now. “I’m really proud of this record, but it doesn’t feel cohesive to me,” she stated. “I was not really holding my own ground with knowing exactly what I was doing.” She even confessed to feeling disconnected from some of her earlier work, questioning, “When I listen to ‘Sparks’ or even watch the video, I’m like, who is that girl?” Despite this, she acknowledged the song’s enduring popularity with fans.

Looking back at her early career, Duff recalled a blend of naiveté and excitement. “I think it was a combination of not entirely knowing what I was doing and also being thrilled to be a pop star,” she said with humor.Interestingly, her path to music wasn’t conventional. She revealed she initially received voice lessons to address a childhood speech impediment, recounting, “I had a speech impediment when I was a kid and somebody was telling my mom, ‘put her in voice lessons,’ and my mom was like, ‘OK.'” It was a combination of these lessons and an admiration for artists like britney Spears that ignited her ambition. “I was like, well I’m also gonna be a pop star, so watch this,” she joked.

As she prepares to release her new music, Duff expressed a renewed enthusiasm for her existing catalog. “For the first time in a really long time, like 15 years maybe,” she said,”I feel so excited to sing my old songs again.” She anticipates a more fulfilling experience this time, eager to reinterpret her earlier work in a way that resonates with both her personal growth and her audience’s nostalgia.”To kind of do it my way now – it’s going to be a really lovely victory lap.”
