Hilary Hahn Undergoes Surgery for Recurring Nerve Injury, Announces Recovery Journey
A celebrated violinist, Hilary Hahn, has revealed she recently underwent surgery to address a recurring nerve injury, forcing the cancellation of performances through 2025. The acclaimed musician shared a detailed account of her health challenges and optimistic outlook in a recent social media post.
Hahn’s journey began a year and a half ago when a cervical spinal disc first herniated. She initially recovered, returning to the stage despite experiencing muscle atrophy and ongoing nerve stress. However, the same disc herniated again this past summer, severely compressing her remaining nerve space.
“It was immediately clear that I needed to pursue more aggressive treatment,” Hahn wrote. Fortunately, she found a skilled surgeon – a former violinist himself – who performed a successful artificial disc replacement. “My career has a future again, my neck has healthier alignment than before, and I am pain free,” she stated.
A Challenging Road to Recovery
The surgery, while successful, necessitates a significant recovery period. Hahn acknowledges the long-term consequences and uncertainties inherent in surgical procedures, but remains positive about the prognosis. She is currently focused on rebuilding her strength and micro-coordination, allowing her nerves to heal.
“At this point, I’m working on getting my strength and micro-coordination back while allowing the nerves to get their bearings again,” she explained. Fans may notice Hahn wearing scarves, a practical measure to protect her surgical scar during healing, both in her personal life and onstage. She playfully suggests it might become a new stylistic choice.
Performance Cancellations and Future Outlook
The injury initially led to the withdrawal of all performances from July 2024 through February 2025. Subsequent attempts to return to the stage, including a planned BBC Proms performance in August and a November return, were ultimately unsuccessful, resulting in the cancellation of all remaining performances through the end of 2025.
Hahn expressed deep gratitude for the patience and support she has received from friends, colleagues, and fans throughout this ordeal. She emphasized the profound impact of regaining her quality of life, a gift she will never take for granted.
