AI-Powered Innovations Win Gilead’s Visionarium Awards, Promising breakthroughs in HIV Prevention and Care

A new wave of artificial intelligence-driven solutions is poised to reshape the landscape of HIV prevention, diagnosis, and long-term health management, following the declaration of winners at the second annual Visionarium Innovation by Gilead gala in Madrid. The project, the first acceleration hub dedicated to innovative HIV projects, received support from leading scientific organizations including the Spanish Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology (Seimc), the AIDS Study Group (Gesida), and several other key research and advocacy groups.

Digital Twin” for targeted Prevention

Taking top honors in the prevention category was HIVision Spain, a spatial intelligence platform designed to translate complex clinical, behavioral, and territorial data into actionable health policy. The platform utilizes a “digital twin” – a multiscale population simulator – of the HIV epidemic, allowing researchers and policymakers to test hypothetical scenarios and develop targeted microplans for both specific territories and levels of care. This system provides data-driven metrics to optimize prevention strategies and accelerate early diagnosis.

HIV-Alert: AI-Driven Early Detection Through Clinical Note Analysis

In the diagnosis category, HIV-Alert emerged as the winning project. This digital health initiative employs artificial intelligence and natural language processing to analyze clinical notes in real-time,identifying risk patterns and automatically triggering alerts for HIV serology testing when appropriate. Early results indicate the tool has strong healthcare performance and the potential to increase testing rates,reduce diagnostic delays,and improve overall outcomes.

IA-PROM-HIV: Personalized Care through AI-Powered Patient feedback

The “healthy future” category was won by IA-PROM-HIV, an AI-powered system that analyzes patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and patient-reported experience measures (PREMs). Thes questionnaires reveal crucial clinical needs, emotional barriers, and hidden risks faced by individuals living with HIV. The system then delivers personalized recommendations aligned with established clinical guidelines from organizations like Gesida, the European AIDS Clinical Society (EACS), and the International AIDS Society (IAS). These recommendations encompass analytical monitoring alerts, lifestyle suggestions, nutritional support, exercise prescriptions, and even therapeutic adjustments based on individual tolerance. The system also aims to proactively prevent avoidable events,such as hospitalizations,and optimize resource allocation.

Gilead and Partners Invest in a Future Focused on Innovation

Luis Armenteros, director of Gilead’s HIV buisness unit, emphasized the program’s success, noting that the 26 candidate projects received demonstrate a commitment to innovation that extends beyond conventional pharmaceutical growth.”Innovation is not only about treatments or therapeutic innovations. it is indeed also the way we do things and how we can promote projects in an area as relevant to us as HIV,” he stated.gilead anticipates continuing to support future editions of Visionarium.

Addressing Unmet Needs and Prioritizing the Individual

Jorge Garrido, executive director of the NGO Apoyo Positivo, underscored the importance of these initiatives in addressing unmet needs within the HIV field. “We have been doing [innovation] for a long time, but we have not been able to reach those objectives both in the particular needs of the person with HIV and in the Sustainable Development Goals themselves for 2030,” he explained. “A project like Visionarium seeks,precisely,specific projects that,in a disruptive way,change the course of the narrative to put the person at the center of their needs.”

The ongoing Challenge of HIV Diagnosis and Treatment

Despite progress, important challenges remain in achieving global HIV targets. According to Jesús Troya, an HIV specialist, UNAIDS has established ambitious goals for treatment and diagnosis, but these remain elusive. He highlighted that a significant population remains undiagnosed, and even with recent reductions, undiagnosed individuals continue to drive new infections. “From a clinical and epidemiological point of view, the tools have shown that they are not sufficient,” Troya noted, emphasizing the potential of technology and AI to provide crucial support in meeting these objectives and ultimately achieving viral undetectability for all people living with HIV.
