A community in Minnesota is rallying around a powerful cause, transforming grief into action through a unique hockey tournament dedicated to the memory of Jake Haapajoki, a 16-year-old lost to suicide in 2018. The event aims to not only honor Jake’s life but also to raise vital funds for mental health initiatives and reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness.
From Tragedy to Action: The Birth of Smiles for Jake
Following the tragic loss of Jake Haapajoki, residents of Baxter, Minnesota, united with a shared determination to foster open conversations about mental health. This initial push for dialogue quickly evolved into tangible support, culminating in the creation of the nonprofit organization, Smiles for Jake. Years later, the organization’s impact continues to expand through community events like the recent Snow Many Smiles in Crosby and the upcoming Jake Haapajoki Memorial Cup.
“It’s really incredible we can come together, we can give back to the community, we can honor Jake’s memory… and all of those we’ve lost throughout the year to suicide, and provide resources to those who might need them as well,” a senior official with the organization stated.
A Backyard Rink Becomes a Symbol of Hope
Despite not playing on an organized team, Jake Haapajoki possessed a deep love for skating, often enjoying time on his backyard rink. That very rink now serves as one of three locations for the Jake Haapajoki Memorial Cup, described by organizers as “one of the nicest in the state.” The tournament, scheduled for Saturday, January 3rd, will feature a 3-on-3 format with four divisions: expert, intermediate, novice, and under 12.
Funds generated from the tournament will directly benefit a scholarship program for Brainerd High School students pursuing careers in the mental health field. “It’s a great day to come together and share laughter and smiles,” a representative shared. “And in the dark of winter, you really need that.”
“Supporting, Mentiring, and Inspiring Life in Everyone”
The name “Smiles” in Smiles for Jake embodies the organization’s core mission: Supporting, Mentoring, and Inspiring Life in Everyone. While Jake was known for bringing joy to others, those close to him recognized a hidden struggle. He battled what was described as “brain pain” – a poignant term used to illustrate the internal suffering that ultimately led to his death.
Smiles for Jake is dedicated to promoting the understanding that mental health is as crucial as physical health, working to dismantle the stigma associated with seeking help. The organization offers a range of resources, including education, support programs, and community events. “We know that the best way to have conversations and to talk about our feelings and talk about what’s going on is face-to-face,” a spokesperson explained, while also acknowledging the organization’s commitment to meeting individuals where they are through online resources like online chats and peer-to-peer support systems.
Volunteer and sponsorship opportunities are available for the hockey tournament, and all spectators are welcome. Games will also be held at Forestview Middle School and Loren Thompson Park in Baxter. Full tournament details can be found online.
The Bright Spot is made possible by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund and the citizens of Minnesota.
