Holiday Travel Surge: 122.4 Million Expected to Travel This Weekend

Millions of Americans are navigating a busy holiday travel season, with an estimated 122.4 million people projected to be on the move via roads, railways, and airways. Despite earlier weather disruptions, travel is largely proceeding smoothly, though significant crowds and delays are being reported at major transportation hubs.

Record-Breaking Road Travel Anticipated

AAA forecasts that 109 million Americans will travel by car this holiday period, representing a 2% increase over the previous year. This figure is poised to establish a new record for road travel, fueled in part by lower gas prices, currently averaging around $3.00 a gallon nationally – a decrease compared to last year’s rates.

Air Travel: Smooth Operations Amidst Crowds

As of Saturday morning, flight operations at LaGuardia, Kennedy, and Newark Airports were reported to be running efficiently, particularly following a period of inclement weather in the Tri-State area earlier in the week. However, the surge in passengers is creating noticeable congestion. Travelers at LaGuardia experienced lines up to 20 minutes long at check-in counters, particularly at Terminal B.

Airlines continue to advise passengers to arrive at the airport well in advance of their scheduled departure times. Approximately eight million people are expected to take domestic flights this weekend.

Traveler Resilience and Preparation

Despite some disruptions, travelers are largely maintaining positive attitudes. One student recounted waiting for a flight delayed twice since 10 p.m. Friday night. However, many are adopting a proactive approach to navigate the busy travel landscape.

“God forbid the alarm doesn’t go off. God forbid someone is cranky, like all of us are early in the morning, without our coffee, without our cereal, whatever,” one traveler shared with News 4’s Jessica Cunnington. “So as long as the clothes are laid out, everything is ready, packed, ready to go. We go, ‘bing, bam, boom.’ This line means nothing.”

This sentiment underscores the importance of thorough preparation as millions continue their journeys home for the holidays.
