Rendered obsolete by the rise of smartphones, the sacred ritual of the postcard during the holidays has not said its last word. It is now possible to send a missive from your phone.

For decades, the postcard has made vacationers’ heads spin. However, even though it is still on the shelves of tourist shops, it faces strong competition. “I’m more of a phone generation“, explains a young woman. Another concedes that she has “lazy to do it“, while recognizing that she likes to receive them. A shopkeeper remembers when she sold a hundred a day, against only twenty currently.

67% of French people still send postcards

A family, seated on a terrace, writes cards that they will send to their loved ones. Even the youngest are getting into it. “It’s good to pass the line to the children, to show them that it’s not just the telephone. Keeping the writing down is important“, says the mother of the family. A couple of holidaymakers are also attached to the tradition of the postcard. They send them in digital format. 67% say they always send cards during the holidays.
