BarcelonaThis weekend some Betis players were together to celebrate a wedding. In a photo that Víctor Camarasa uploaded to stories on his Instagram profile, you could see Borja Iglesias and Aitor Ruibal each with a bag in hand. Other footballers such as Juanmi, Víctor Ruiz and Camarasa himself also appear in the same photo. After making this photograph public, a “noisy minority”, in the words of Ruibal, dedicated homophobic insults to both the Betic player of Sallent (Bages) and the former Espanyol. The reason for the insults and mockery was directed as much by the way they were dressed as by the bag they were carrying.

Neither Iglesias nor Ruibal wanted to remain silent and did not take long to denounce this unpleasant reality on their Twitter profiles. The Catalan defender was the first to speak. “After the frustrated attempts by a noisy minority to ridicule my colleague Borja Iglesias and me, with reference to our clothing, as well as its alleged link to our sexual orientation, I just want to emphasize: the importance to maintain respect for any person, regardless of their sexual orientation or of any kind. The need, once and for all, to normalize and live with each other by rejecting and distancing ourselves from any type of phobia, so that we can live together normally in our society. Condemn the homophobia that obviously continues to exist to one degree or another and fight for its eradication. Those who continue to display such behavior at this time need help urgently. The problem is with them because of their intolerance and their complexes”, wrote Ruibal in a thread.

For his part, Iglesias, who had already denounced homophobic insults on other occasions for wearing painted nails, has also shown his rejection of users who, often anonymously, dedicate themselves to distributing insults against homosexuals and of the LGTBI+ collective. “Every time this type of situation happens with reference to the phobias that still exist, they give me strength to continue fighting so that everyone can do and enjoy with themselves and others as they want. Thank you very much for all the messages of love you always give me. And to those of you who are still in prehistory, I send you lots of encouragement: it must be very difficult not to evolve and continue to condition yourself instead of enjoying how precious life is.”
