SCOTTSDALE, AZ – UConn baseball begins its 2026 season with a challenging trip to the MLB Desert Invitational, a clear signal the Huskies aren’t shying away from top competition as they aim to return to the NCAA Tournament.
The Huskies kick off the tournament Friday, February 13, at 8 p.m. ET against Nebraska at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, with the game broadcast on MLB Network. Saturday, February 14, UConn faces Kansas State at 7 p.m. ET at Scottsdale Stadium, and the Invitational concludes Sunday, February 15, against the Air Force Academy at 8 p.m. ET. Saturday and Sunday’s games will be streamed on MLB.com, and all three contests can be heard on MIXLR, with Chris Jones providing play-by-play for his 17th season calling UConn baseball games.
A Near Miss Fuels 2026 Ambitions
UConn is determined to reclaim its place in the NCAA Tournament after narrowly missing a bid in 2025.
UConn’s streak of six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances ended in 2025, despite a strong 38-win season and a share of its fifth straight BIG EAST Regular Season title. The Huskies are hungry to avoid a repeat and are building a roster capable of making a deep postseason run.
The team boasts 20 newcomers for the 2026 season, comprised of 15 transfers and 5 incoming freshmen, injecting both experience and fresh talent into the lineup.
Left-handers Charlie West (vs. Nebraska), Cayden Dry (vs. Kansas State), and Oliver Pudvar (vs. Air Force) are slated to start the opening games of the Invitational.
A Winning Tradition
Since 2010, the Huskies have reached 10 NCAA Tournaments, including six straight from 2018-2024. UConn is one of only 33 teams to achieve this level of consistent postseason success over the past 15 years.
Key Players to Watch
Tyler Minick: The Power Threat
Junior Tyler Minick enters the 2026 season as a force to be reckoned with after earning Second Team NCBWA All-American honors in 2025. The Reading, Pennsylvania native led the BIG EAST with 22 home runs – nearly setting a program record – and ranked eighth nationally in that category. He finished with a .355 batting average, 76 hits, 74 RBI, and a .734 slugging percentage. Minick, a team captain, will transition to the outfield this season and was also named a Preseason All-BIG EAST selection.
Rob Rispoli: The Table Setter
Redshirt sophomore Rob Rispoli burst onto the scene in 2025, earning First Team All-BIG EAST accolades after hitting .324 with 68 runs scored and 70 hits. Rispoli led the team with 46 walks and is poised for another strong season at the top of the UConn order. He’s also a team captain for the 2026 campaign.
Maddix Dalena: Back in the Lineup
Senior Maddix Dalena returns to the Huskies lineup in 2026 after an injury limited him to 11 games and eight starts last year. In 2024, he had his best season in Storrs, hitting 13 home runs and driving in 43 runs, earning Second Team All-BIG EAST honors.
Connor Lane: Developing Behind the Plate
Sophomore Connor Lane had a strong freshman campaign in 2025, hitting .280 with 11 doubles, six home runs, and 34 RBIs in 39 games. He’s expected to continue to develop and contribute significantly as the team’s catcher.
Pitching Prowess: West, Pudvar, and Dry
Junior Charlie West emerged as a surprise contributor in 2025, transitioning from the bullpen to the rotation due to injury and going 6-0 with a 2.58 ERA in 52.1 innings. Lefthander Oliver Pudvar led the staff with 70.0 innings pitched and a 6-1 record with a 3.60 ERA. Sophomore Cayden Dry, after a strong start to 2025 before being sidelined by injury, is expected to be a key part of the starting rotation in 2026.
Bullpen Depth
Right-handed pitcher Sean Finn took a significant step forward in 2025, becoming a key bridge to closer Brady Afthim. He appeared in 21 games, striking out 49 batters in 33.0 innings and holding opponents to a .213 batting average. Greg Shaw III led the Huskies with 26 appearances in 2025, totaling 54.2 innings and a 4-0 record.
Power Conference Tests Ahead
UConn has a 99-91 record against teams from “Power 4” Conferences since 2010. The 2026 schedule includes 11 games against Power 4 opponents: Nebraska, Kansas State, Arizona State, Arizona (four games), California, Boston College (two games), and Rutgers.
The Huskies secured their fifth-straight BIG EAST regular season title in 2025, tying a record with 17 conference wins. They’ve been voted the preseason conference favorites for 2026.
The UConn baseball staff, led by head coach Jim Penders and assistants Jeff Hourigan, Josh MacDonald, and volunteer assistant Chris Sole, is the longest-tenured staff in Division I baseball, having worked together for 14 seasons.
Tyler Minick, Maddix Dalena, and Rob Rispoli have been voted captains for the 2026 campaign.
