This morning the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) commemorated 8 years of institutional life of the Calderón General Teaching Hospital (HGDC). José Ruales, Minister of Health, led the anniversary event of this health center that maintains a focus on teaching, research and innovation in health.

The HGDC was born hand in hand with the Central University of Ecuador (UCE) and during its years of operation it has established a close link with other universities in the country such as the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador (PUCE), UTE University, University of the Americas ( UDLA), Chimborazo Higher Polytechnic School (ESPOCH), San Francisco de Quito University (USFQ) and Indoamérica University.

Ruales pointed out that the Ministry of Health strengthens care services with the hiring of human talent on a national scale. “In this hospital we have hired 76 professionals this year and in the month of August an additional 60 will enter, that is, a total of 136 new professionals at the service of the community.”

“We have strengthened the equipment, maintenance and expansion of hospital services. In these last months of the year we are going to intervene in the operating rooms, the sterilization center and the emergency area of the hospital to improve care and the capacity to offer services,” said the health authority.

This hospital constitutes a key element to implement quality strategies and regulations in health services. An example is the contribution provided during the pandemic to combat COVID-19. It became a contingency and support hospital for sentinel hospitals, guaranteeing continuity of care during 2019 and 2021.

Juan Pablo Velasco, HGDC manager, pointed out that this anniversary commemorates the struggle of a great mission. “This hospital has important achievements at the service of a community of approximately 980,000 inhabitants between the towns of Llano Chico, Calderón, Guayallabamba and even nearby provinces.”

He mentioned that the hospital is developing the pilot plan for digital transformation in health with the implementation of the telemedicine service. “We have attended 121 patients by teleconsultation in 7 medical specialties and tele-education in mental health, prenatal education, nutritional counseling and monitoring of chronic diabetic and hypertensive patients. Our approach is based on prevention and health promotion,” she indicated.

Maternal and child care is a priority for the professionals in this establishment. For this reason, one of its greatest achievements was in 2019, when it became the first MSP hospital certified as Health Establishments as Mother and Child Friendly (ESAMyN) and obtained recertification in 2021. It was also certified as a Health Establishment Friendly to Organ and Tissue Donation in the year 2022.

“All the professionals who are part of the Calderón Hospital have a feeling of pride. Today I am also proud of the duty fulfilled by this emblematic hospital, with its own personality and characteristics. I congratulate the entire team who, with their capacity, human quality, vocation, dedication and professionalism, make this establishment a pioneer in health”, concluded Ruales.
