At that time Kanika came back and started living with her parents in Borjhar village. But she did not want to be a burden on them, so she started doing small jobs with the self-help group of the village.

In these works she could earn only Rs 1000-2000 per month. Along with financial problems, he was also worried about his daughter’s future. In such a situation, in the year 2014, he got a chance to participate in a workshop going on at the nearby Krishi Vigyan Kendra. There he came to know about small industries related to agriculture. Which included work ranging from mushroom growing to fish farming.

Kanika also got to know about vermicompost business in this workshop. But before this he had no knowledge about farming or making compost. Then, with the aim of starting his own business, he went to KVK and learned how to make vermicompost.

Kanika took training but did not have much money to start her work. He started his business with just one kilo of earthworms which he got from Krishi Vigyan Kendra. Using just Rs 500 from his savings, he made a vermicompost bed from bamboo and local material.

It was Kanika’s hard work and dedication due to which she made 800 kg vermicompost in the very first year and earned good profit by selling it at Rs 10 per kg. This success further boosted his morale. Then Kanika increased the number of compost beds with her profit money.

He prepared 10 vermicompost beds of 10Ă—3 feet size. Apart from this, he also made an 85Ă—35 feet vermicompost bed on his family’s 1.5 bigha land. In this way, today she is producing up to 35 tonnes of vermicompost in a month and is earning a turnover of Rs 3 lakh from it.

Not only this, Kanika is teaching other women like her to make vermicompost in the village itself and is helping them also become self-reliant.

Kanika has also created a brand named ‘Jai Vermicompost’ to sell her products. Under the same brand, she sells vermicompost and vermiwash, which are priced between Rs 12 per kg, around Rs 70 per litre.

Today Kanika’s products are being sold in nearby nurseries, agricultural science centers and also online. In this way, by building her own successful business in just 10 years, Kanika has become an inspiration for many women like her.
