Charles Ellis “Chuck” Schumer, the Democratic leader in the Senate, has actively sought to secure U.S. aid for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.
This was reported on the “Be Or” Telegram channel.
The Republicans’ sudden decision on February 7 to vote against border reform that was tied to aid to Ukraine forced Schumer to take decisive action. He decoupled Ukraine aid from border reform by introducing a separate bill that, while it failed to get even 60 votes on the first ballot (only 8 Republicans supported it), gave time to convince Republican senators of the need for Ukraine aid.
This strategy worked, and the number of supporting Republicans increased to 17 on the second vote. Among them were Grassley, Capito, John Neely Kennedy, Collins, Cornyn, Cassidy, McConnell, Moran, Murkowski, Rounds, Romney, Dan Sullivan, Tillis, Thune, Wicker, Ernst and Young.
In the final vote, it was possible to obtain support from 22 Republicans, including 5 more people who joined: John Boozman, Kevin Cramer, Mike Crapo, Jim Risch and John Hoeven. Although the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, immediately rejected the Senate bill, support for Ukraine in the Senate became the starting point for further pressure on Johnson and the House. Under this pressure and with the participation of international influence, the idea of a discharge petition arose to speed up the vote.
Under pressure, Johnson could not resist – this is already history. However, it all started on February 7th, when Chuck Schumer did everything he could to provide aid to Ukraine.
Interesting fact: Chuck Schumer comes from a Jewish family whose ancestors came from Chortkiv (Ternopil region, Ukraine). The politician himself was born in Brooklyn to Jewish parents Selma and Abraham Schumer, and is also a relative of actress and comedian Amy Schumer.
