The budget ruling makes the climate-friendly restructuring of the economy more difficult. In 2021, the Karlsruhe judges called on the government to do more to protect the climate. But one element connects the two decisions.
Since the Federal Constitutional Court’s budget ruling, politicians have not only been asked questions about how the climate-friendly restructuring of the economy should be financed. It is also questionable how the highest German court now views climate protection. As a reminder: In spring 2021, Karlsruhe caused a stir with its climate resolution. Accordingly, the Basic Law contains a climate protection requirement that obliges the state to work towards climate neutrality. To ensure that freedom does not come to an emergency stop, politicians must set the course for the necessary CO2 reduction in a timely and careful manner.
But since the budget verdict, the question has arisen as to how the climate-friendly transformation should be financed. Billions of euros are now no longer available. In addition, the Constitutional Court has severely restricted the possibilities of borrowing.
