AI has numerous capabilities, can generate images, make predictions or generate speech. Behind all of these talents lies data from which the AI derives characteristics.
How does an AI work?
Simply explained, artificial intelligence (AI) is an attempt to transfer the way human thinking and learning works to a computer using software. Instead of the usual programming to complete a specific task, the computer learns to make decisions, find answers and solve problems independently through AI.
In order for this to work, AI systems need comprehensive training in which the software learns which decision is preferable in which situation. To do this, AI developers train their learning algorithms on a particularly powerful computer with extensive training data sets. Once training is complete, the AI can make decisions independently based on the training data and other input data provided by the user.
AI is used in many areas
When it comes to artificial intelligence, many people immediately think of “ChatGPT”. The chatbot created by Open AI answers questions, creates images and supports programming. We have put together some typical use cases for modern AI systems for you:
- AI in medicine: If the doctor found the right treatment, he already knew the diagnosis. Finding these is not always easy. AI systems support by analyzing large amounts of patient data in the shortest possible time. If patterns can be derived from this, the doctor receives valuable information for making a diagnosis. Another area of application is the assessment of images. Tests have already shown that trained AI can detect skin cancer using photographs with a high accuracy rate.
- On the stock exchange: Analyzing financial data is important for investors. This allows us to derive patterns that a human trader could miss. AI is able to make predictions about price movements and provide trading recommendations. AI is not yet suitable as a system that works alone. The optimal synergy effects can be achieved from human and artificial intelligence.
- AI for speech and image development: ChatGPT tells jokes, answers questions and is seen by some users as “the better Google”. There is more to the complex system than just an artificial conversation partner. When appropriately trained, voice AI systems are capable of providing customer service, outputting programming languages, and developing images and graphics on command.
Like other software, AI does not work without errors
It is important to understand that AI systems make mistakes. The quality of an AI’s output depends very much on the quality and extent of the training and input data provided. The more correct information the software has available, the more precise its answers will be. However, certain inputs or fake training data can also be used to deliberately provoke wrong decisions. This results in an AI chatbot providing incorrect information or an AI that processes images not correctly recognizing objects within it.
