Cologne Europe imports around 800,000 tons of car batteries annually, as well as 190,000 tons of industrial and 160,000 tons of consumer batteries. This offers enormous opportunities for the recycling market and its investors. Because the majority of these batteries are now disposed of – and not yet reused.
“The prospects for the battery recycling market are positive,” says Adrian Daniel, portfolio manager of the Main First Absolute Return Multi Asset fund. One of the growth drivers is the new EU battery regulation passed in July. Regulations contained therein, such as simple exchange options and recycling efficiency, will strengthen the recycling service providers.
And since raw materials such as cobalt or nickel for the production of new batteries are and will remain scarce, the recycling market is likely to experience long-term growth – high recycling rates would ensure security of supply in Europe. So there is a lot of interest in pushing battery recycling forward.
