Power Outage Affects Over 750,000 Homes in Chile
On Saturday, August 3rd, over 750,000 homes across Chile remained without electricity following a power outage. The outage primarily affected the Metropolitan Region, with over 500,000 homes without power.
The Superintendency of Electricity and Fuels (SEC) reported that the most affected communes in the Metropolitan Region were:
- Pudahuel (49,307 customers)
- Maipu (47,813)
- Quilicura (38,427)
- Colina (34,097)
- Lampa (32,233)
- Recoleta (25,688)
In the Metropolitan Region, approximately 79.5% of customers had normal electricity service at the time of the report.
Unequal Restoration of Service Criticized
The uneven restoration of power across different communes has sparked criticism. Maipú Mayor Tomás Vodanovic expressed concern that some communes were receiving preferential treatment, citing the significant difference in the number of homes without power between Las Condes and Maipú.
Other mayors echoed these concerns, highlighting the prolonged outage in their areas.
