From 500 to 3,000 Cuban pesos will be the scale of the salary increase for Education and Public Health workers, one of the measures announced by the government recently and that will take into account, above all, years of service.

The figures were announced on the Mesa Redonda television program, and it was clarified that, according to Maritza Cruz García, vice minister of Finance and Prices, the salary cannot be raised for all workers in all sectors that are suffering from inflation, because The Cuban economy is growing “discreetly” and there is no income to support this social spending.

In health, for example, there will be almost a million workers who will benefit from the increase. In fact, the measure for professionals and technicians directly related to medical care will begin to apply from January 1.

The Vice Minister of Public Health, Luis Fernando Navarro Martínez, stated that the first group to be granted an additional monthly payment for years of service will be doctors, stomatologists, nursing staff, psychologists, technologists, graduates and technicians who perform specific functions related to the health activity.

He also explained that those personnel who have been working for 30 years or more receive an increase of 400 pesos per month every two years.

Payments in the hourly rate, that is, the pesos per hour, receive modifications according to these amounts and schedules:

For doctors and stomatologists, a fee of 50 pesos (Monday to Friday from seven at night to seven in the morning. Saturdays, from noon, and Sundays from seven in the morning).

For nursing staff, the rate is 40 pesos/hour, from seven at night to seven in the morning. The schedules depend on the setting they have.

For health technologists, a rate of 30 pesos/hour from seven at night to seven in the morning.

There will also be an extra payment for special working conditions for health personnel who work directly in services of greater demand and responsibility, “or who care for patients with pathologies that require greater physical or mental effort.”

And the education workers?

Naima Trujillo Barreto, current Minister of Education of Cuba, specified that this increase has involved modifying resolutions and designing new procedures. But basically the concept will be very similar to Health, the increase will depend on the years of service.

Precisely, that seniority “is one of the issues that had been prioritized, not only in systematic approaches by workers in the sector, but also by non-teaching workers. They are also part of the comprehensive educational process that develops from early childhood to all educational levels,” he said.

At this time, the sector is concentrating more immediately on those measures that will be applied from January 1. “Even if the payments happen in February, since January the person who has a certain seniority is counting and is anticipating that he will receive those amounts.”

The measure not only benefits teachers, non-teachers such as cleaning workers, cooks, drivers, administrators, etc., will also benefit, to a lesser extent.
