Today the streets are quiet, many of the activists behind bars. It is not just the National Security Act that kills the pro-democrats. An electoral reform passed in the spring also has far-reaching consequences. The “Patriot Law” written by Beijing passed through the Hong Kong Parliament in May. On Sunday there will be elections for the first time under the new system, namely large parts of the so-called election committee. The reform is complex and technical. The result is so far, so simple: it amounts to a de facto elimination of the opposition.
