Sugar cane harvest in Brazil

Salvador In the middle of the endless sugar cane fields in the west of the Brazilian state of São Paulo, every few kilometers there are refineries the size of steel mills. Sugar cane has been milled there for many decades – and in the early 2000s the business functioned largely as it did at the end of the colonial era.
Most of the factories were family owned. Many companies were over-indebted and hardly invested at all. In some cases, dozens of heirs owned shares – and were often hopelessly divided. This was also the case in the Ometto family, whose ancestors emigrated from Veneto to Brazil.
The family was already the largest sugar and ethanol producer in Brazil in 1989. But the clan argued over strategy. In this difficult situation, Rubens Ometto managed to create clarity – and turn his family’s sugar company into a global player in the energy transition.
