Do you have a missed call on your cell phone? Instead of dialing that unknown number, try this trick to find out whether or not it was a SPAM call.
Nowadays, smartphone users, whether Android o iPhone, are usually the target of the famous SPAM calls, which tend to interrupt at the most inopportune moments. Fortunately, there are several methods to avoid them, but you should keep in mind that you could miss an authentic call made by a friend, family member, co-worker or another person whose phone number is not in our contact list. Is there any way to differentiate them? Here we are going to show you one.
What are SPAM calls?
In recent years, SPAM calls have become the ‘daily bread’, since there are hundreds of companies (call centers) that are dedicated to making them. Generally, these types of calls will seek to sell a product or service. It could be a bank offering you a credit card, an insurer that provides health insurance for you and your family, your mobile phone operator that wants you to switch to a more expensive plan, but with more benefits, etc.

There are also some SPAM calls that could be made by criminals looking for a new victim. A scammer who tells you that you won a prize (and that you must pay the VAT to claim it), an extortionist who will scare you into transferring a large sum of money, a supposed bank worker who will tell you that they entered your account and that He wants your password so you can get your money back. Those are some of the most common cases.
In case you have not heard the call, since your cell phone was in silent mode, by entering the application you can have your list of missed calls. There you will see not only the number, but also the name to which it was associated. If it is a number with SPAM reports, it will appear marked in red, the same will happen with the numbers of possible criminals. In this way, it is only recommended to call back the rest of the numbers.
Although Truecaller is an application that works perfectly, many cybersecurity experts recommend not using it, because it not only adds your phone number to its database, but also the numbers of your friends. That is, even if your family has downloaded the app, their data is already in their possession, because you downloaded the caller ID and, by agreeing to use it, you provided their number and names.
How to avoid SPAM calls without installing Truecaller?
Android phones running at least Android 9.0 have a feature that prevents you from receiving SPAM calls. Although it does not work as well as Truecaller, since there are numbers that it does not recognize, it is a good alternative, in case you do not want to use this application, which has Swedish origins. To enable it, you must follow these steps:
- Open the Google Phone app and go to Settings
- Click on Caller ID and SPAM
- You will see two options: View sender ID and SPAM, and Filter SPAM calls
- By default, both options will be disabled, you have to activate them.
