Kaiserslautern Wipotec’s boiler room is humming and the air is stuffy. Engineer Otto Reisig takes care of the medium-sized company’s energy management. He is the owner of the utility technology company of the same name and advises companies such as Wipotec. “Normally sweat runs straight down your forehead here,” says Reisig, pretending to wipe sweat from his forehead with the palm of his hand. But he doesn’t sweat. And he took care of that himself.

This is due to the special systems that the machine manufacturer Wipotec from Kaiserslautern has built. These extract the warm exhaust air from generators that supply the machines with compressed air. There is a lot of know-how behind the further processing: the extracted air is used for heating in winter, and in summer it is stored in the sandstone in the ground for the winter – a so-called geomassive storage facility.
