Bangkok Prepares for Cervical Cancer Vaccination Campaign

Bangkok, Thailand – The Health Office in Bangkok is actively preparing for a cervical cancer vaccination campaign targeted at women aged 11-20. The campaign aims to provide support and vaccination services within and outside the education system.

Under the project initiated in 2015, the HPV vaccination service started in schools under the Health Office’s jurisdiction, with the goal of immunizing female students in Grade 5. The service was provided free of charge, and approximately 100 students received the vaccine each year. This initiative continued until 2017, and it was considered a success, leading the Department of Disease Control, Ministry of Public Health, to expand the vaccination program nationwide for female students in Grade 5.

With the expansion, it is expected that around 90,000 individuals in the target group will receive the vaccine this time. To ensure the success of the campaign, Bangkok has planned its vaccination services in accordance with the guidelines set by the Ministry of Public Health. The Office of Basic Vaccination Operations in Schools is actively involved in coordinating with four network partner agencies to prepare and support the HPV vaccination campaign.

This coordination involves disseminating policy details and vaccine service points to educational institutions, working with the public relations office and district office to raise awareness among the target group about the policies and benefits of the HPV vaccine. Additionally, all 69 Bangkok Public Health Service Centers will play a key role in planning and executing proactive school vaccinations. The centers will provide vaccinations to students aged 11-18 in schools, as well as offering a walk-in service to women aged 18-20 or those pursuing higher education.

To kick off the campaign, a special activity has been scheduled for November 8, 2023, in collaboration with other health zones in schools across Bangkok.

Ms. Suporn Khumwong, Deputy Director of the Education Bureau, Acting Director of the Education Bureau expressed her satisfaction with the progress made in surveying data on female students in schools under their jurisdiction. This data will help in preparing and providing the HPV vaccine services as per the Ministry of Public Health’s guidelines.

The authorities are committed to ensuring the success of this vaccination campaign in order to combat cervical cancer and protect the health and well-being of young women in Bangkok.]
