Hamburger SV lost important points in the promotion race. Hamburg lost in the last minute against VfL Osnabrück.
In the promotion race of the 2nd Bundesliga, HSV was unable to take advantage of the competition’s mistakes on Sunday. The Hanseatic League lost 1:2 (1:1) at home against bottom team VfL Osnabrück.
Lukas Kunze gave the guests an early lead in the Volkspark (6th minute). Robert Glatzel equalized with a penalty kick shortly before the break (45th + 2). VfL captain Maxwell Gyamfi was sent off 76th in the second half with a yellow-red card. But Hamburg were no longer able to take advantage of their superiority. On the contrary: Shortly before the end, Michaël Cuisance also scored the winning goal for Lower Saxony with a penalty kick (89th).
That’s how the game went
After the 1-0 win on his debut against SV Elversberg, HSV coach Steffen Baumgart wanted his team to get the next three points. Good for Hamburg: The competition in the promotion race had already made a mistake in advance. St. Pauli and Fürth lost, Kiel, Hanover and Düsseldorf only played a draw.
Despite the good conditions, the game started with a bitter setback for HSV. A free kick for VfL Osnabrück beat Cuisance into the penalty area. There, Kunze got loose at the far post and shot in with a volley.
As a result, HSV had little idea. Osnabrück made life difficult for the home team. Shortly before the break, referee Hempel pointed to the point. VfL defender Gyamfi cleared Pherai. There were rightly penalties for HSV and yellow for the culprit. Glatzel loaded VfL keeper Kühn and hit the ball flat into the left corner.
In the second half, HSV had clear field advantages. But it was only rarely necessary. Königsdörffer missed the best chance when he headed over the Osnabrück goal box (52′).
Gyamfi then did his team a disservice. After a foul on van de Brempt, he received his second yellow card and had to go down. Ironically, it was the HSV defender who then put VfL on the road to victory. He hit substitute Tesche while trying to clear the ball. Cuisance converted the penalty with the help of the crossbar to secure a celebrated victory (89′).
HSV remains stuck in third place with 43 points. Hannover 96, Greuther Fürth and Paderborn are lurking with 38 points, just behind the former Bundesliga dinosaur. With its second win in a row, Osnabrück moves a little closer to the non-relegation places. There are still six points until relegation.

SV Elversberg lost their home game against fellow promoted team Wehen Wiesbaden 0:3 (0:1). Thijmen Goppel scored shortly before half-time to give the visitors the lead (44′). In the second half, Hyun-Ju Lee and John Iredale extended this (49’/84′).
SC Paderborn drew 0-0 (0-0) with 1. FC Magdeburg. FCM professional Luca Schuler was sent off with a red card in the 79th minute after a serious foul.
