Huawei’s rumored Mate X8 foldable smartphone has surfaced in an October 2026 engineering prototype leak featuring an 8.15-inch inner display, a battery exceeding 6,000mAh, and a potential price bracket around 10,000 yuan that could undercut its predecessor.
The Huawei Mate X8 has emerged through a detailed prototype leak shared on Weibo in mid-October 2026. Tipster Digital Chat Station described the device as a large folding camera
phone, offering a steady update over the Mate X7 rather than a radical overhaul. Built as a book-style foldable that opens sideways into a mini-tablet, the upcoming handset maintains the classic side-folding format rather than shifting to the shorter, wider proportions favored by some competing manufacturers.
Hardware Upgrades in Display, Battery, and Camera Tech
The engineering sample packs a modest expansion in screen real estate alongside a notable jump in power capacity. The inner folding display stretches to 8.15 inches, up from 8 inches on the Mate X7, while the outer cover screen measures approximately 6.5 inches compared to its predecessor’s 6.49-inch panel. Both screens utilize ultra-thin glass.
Battery capacity sees a more substantial lift. While the standard Mate X7 houses a 5,525mAh battery, the Mate X8 prototype features a power source rated above 6,000mAh. Imaging hardware relies on a 50MP main sensor utilizing the 1/1.28-inch SmartSens SC595 component equipped with an RYYB color filter and a variable aperture, paired alongside a 50MP periscope telephoto lens. Under the hood, the device is tipped to run on a new-generation flagship processor from the Kirin family, though the exact chip nomenclature remains undisclosed in current leaks.
Compared to the previous model, enhancements on the Huawei Mate X8 reportedly encompass an increased internal screen size, a larger power cell, and a revised camera configuration.
Pricing Speculation Amid Industry Component Pressures
The leak places the potential Chinese market price in the 10,000-yuan class, translating to roughly $1,493 to $1,495 based on conversion estimates around CNY 10,000. If realized, that figure would sit approximately $448 below the launch price of the Mate X7, which debuted at $1,940 or CNY 12,999 for the 12GB RAM and 256GB storage configuration.

Such a price reduction runs counter to prevailing market conditions throughout 2026, where memory chip shortages driven by AI data center demand have pushed up costs for RAM and storage. Huawei’s own Mate 90 flagships included the Mate 90 Pro Max arriving on October 1.
Informant Ice Universe from China reports that the Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max will feature compatibility with a separate one-inch camera module that mounts onto the back of the device.
Unconfirmed Launch Timelines and Market Outlook
Huawei has not officially confirmed the existence, specifications, pricing, or release schedule of the Mate X8. Last year’s Mate X7 debuted alongside the Mate 80 series in November 2025 before hitting store shelves on December 5. In contrast, the Mate 90 Pro Max arrived on October 1, 2026, without an accompanying foldable device. Analysts suggest a domestic launch between late 2026 and early 2027 remains the most plausible window, while international availability and HarmonyOS software support outside China remain unaddressed by official channels.
