Nearly 300 million people worldwide-approximately 3.6% of the global population-suffer from anxiety, according to the latest data from the World Health Institution (WHO). Coupled with a documented rise in stress levels, particularly in the wake of 2023, the need for accessible mental wellbeing tools is greater than ever. Responding to this growing demand, Huawei has announced the integration of an enhanced Emotional Wellbeing function, integrated into the new HUAWEI WATCH GT 6 Series.
A Global Mental Health Crisis
The escalating rates of anxiety and stress are not confined to any single region. A recent United Nations study revealed that mental health challenges, including anxiety, worsened across most countries in 2024 compared to the previous year. Data from Ipsos indicates that 3 in 5 adults across 31 countries reported experiencing stress that impacted their daily lives at least once in 2024. Notably, women are disproportionately affected by stress, while generation Z demonstrates the highest likelihood of experiencing it,with 40% reporting significant stress levels globally.
“These numbers paint a stark picture of the modern condition,” one analyst noted. “The pressures of daily life, combined with global uncertainties, are clearly taking a toll on mental wellbeing.”
Huawei’s New Approach to Emotional Monitoring
With a stated commitment to user health, Huawei has enhanced the Emotional Wellbeing feature in the HUAWEI WATCH GT 6 Series. This technology aims to detect potential anxiety and provide calming support directly from a smartwatch. Developed in collaboration with the Institute of Psychology of the chinese Academy of Sciences, the function leverages the HUAWEI TruSense System to analyze physiological indicators-specifically, RRI (R-R interval) data-which reflect changes in the autonomic nervous system.
The initial iteration of Emotional Wellbeing, launched with the HUAWEI WATCH GT 5 Series, analyzed biometric data for 30 minutes to identify three moods. The new HUAWEI WATCH GT 6 Series substantially improves upon this, performing emotional monitoring and identifying 12 distinct emotional states in just 10 minutes. These states are categorized as follows:
- At Ease: Excited, confident, lively, light, and joyful.
- Neutral: Indifferent, calm, at peace, content.
- Disgusted: Anxious, worried, slightly sad, discouraged.
Tracking Emotions for Proactive Health Management
The core purpose of this feature is to provide users with a ancient record of their emotional states, enabling them to identify potential risks to their mental health and seek professional intervention when necessary. According to a company release, the data is readily accessible both on the smartwatch itself and within the HUAWEI Health submission. Users can even customize their watch face to display this facts at a glance.
To utilize the Emotional Wellbeing feature, users simply need to:
- Wear the watch for at least 10 minutes.
- Open the application on their HUAWEI WATCH GT 6 Series.
- View the automatically displayed emotional state on the screen.
The watch also provides access to relaxation exercises for users experiencing stress and displays a stress level assessment. Huawei defines stress levels as follows:
- 1 to 29%: Low
- 30 to 59%: normal
- 60 to 79%: Medium
- 80 to 99%: High
Trade-In Programme Promotes Accessibility and Sustainability
Huawei is further supporting access to it’s latest technology through a new trade-In program. Users can now exchange their old smartwatches-even damaged or out-of-warranty models-for a discount of up to S/ 900 towards the purchase of a HUAWEI WATCH GT 6 Series. “This initiative not only makes our most advanced wearable technology more accessible but also underscores our commitment to sustainability by giving a second life to existing devices,” a senior official stated. The program aims to provide a cost-effective and environmentally responsible upgrade path for Huawei customers.
