Human Rights Report does not violate any law: EU to AMLO

State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patelassured that the State Department’s annual report on human rights does not violate any international law lawunlike what the president stated Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

“Of course, the publication of the human rights report is not a violation of international law,” Patel said in a press conference, when questioned about the Mexican president’s comments.

The US official explained that the report is “a compilation of entries made from credible information from the media, government agencies, civil society actors, embassies and consulates.”

AMLO commented last Tuesday in La Mañanera that the report is “a big lie from the State Department” and criticized that the United States acts as if it were “the judge in the world and grades who behaves well or who behaves badly.”

In his morning conference today he again attacked the report and accused Washington of being “flagrantly violating international law, the independence and sovereignty of peoples.”

The 2023 report, published on Monday, reveals that López Obrador and other members of his government have “on numerous occasions criticized judges who ruled against the administration” and several followers of the president protested against the president of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), Norma Piña.

This report prepared since 1977 by the Department of State serves as a guide to the United States Congress to determine the foreign aid granted to Mexico and other countries.
