houston Christian University Secures Top Seed in OVC Tournament After Dominant 5-1 Victory

Houston Christian university (HCU) clinched a top-two seed and a first-round bye in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) Tournament after a commanding 5-1 victory over the University of Southern Indiana (USI) on Sunday afternoon at Sorrels Field.The win, combined with a strong regular season, marked HCU’s first 10-win season since 2008.
Explosive Second Half Seals the Win
The Huskies and Screaming Eagles spent the initial 15 minutes of play feeling each other out, with the action largely confined to the midfield. However, HCU quickly began to dictate the pace, creating early opportunities through Ryan Okerayi and Joby Reid. In the 17th minute, the Huskies broke the deadlock. A well-constructed build-up saw Nana Obeng advance the ball up the left flank, finding Caesar Onut, who delivered a precise pass to a trailing D’Alessandro Herrera. Herrera calmly slotted the ball home, marking a fitting goal on his final home appearance.
Despite a pair of shots on target from USI’s Will Kirchhoffer in the 35th minute – both expertly saved by HCU goalkeeper Alex Aitken – the score remained 1-0 heading into halftime.
The second half witnessed an offensive surge from HCU. Just nine minutes into the half, Obeng once again played a pivotal role, lofting a pass over the defense to a streaking Jireh Oyebamiji. Oyebamiji skillfully chipped the ball over the advancing keeper, Jacob English, for his first goal of the season, extending the lead to 2-0.
HCU continued to press, with English making two further saves against shots from Onut and Okerayi. The Huskies’ relentless attack paid off again in the 65th minute when Oyebamiji converted a through ball from Kacy Parish with a powerful left-footed finish, establishing a commanding 3-0 advantage.
Three minutes later,Okerayi increased the lead to four,capitalizing on a turnover near the 18-yard box to score his eighth goal of the season. Joby Reid then capped off the scoring for HCU, finishing a play initiated by Okerayi, who found Ron Pressler for the assist. USI managed to pull one back in the 84th minute through Pablo Juan, assisted by Tony Murphy, finalizing the score at 5-1.
Key Performances and Season Achievements
HCU registered a season-high 19 shots, with 10 on target, resulting in a season-best five goals. The Huskies’ defense proved equally formidable, limiting USI to just six total shot attempts and three on goal, with only one shot coming in the second half and that with under five minutes remaining.
Oyebamiji celebrated his first career brace and game-winning goal on his final day at sorrels Field, while Herrera added his fifth goal of the season and 17th of his career. Okerayi’s eighth goal of the season set a new career high, and he also secured his second assist of the season. Obeng, making his first start of the campaign, contributed with his first two career assists while playing a season-high 81 minutes. Pressler, onut, and Parish also added to the assist tally, with their third, second, and first assists of the season, respectively.
Goalkeeper Alex Aitken secured the win with two saves, bringing his season total to 70 – marking the fourth consecutive season with 70 or more saves. He is now just one save away from reaching 300 for his career.
Looking Ahead to the OVC Tournament
HCU’s remarkable performance secures them a top-two seed in the OVC Tournament, hosted by regular season champion Lindenwood in St. Charles, Missouri. The Huskies will play at 7 pm on Wednesday, November 12 against the winner of the first-round matchup between third-seeded Liberty and sixth-seeded Eastern Illinois. This marks the second consecutive season HCU has earned a second-seed in the tournament.
The Huskies will look to build on their successful regular season and make a deep run in the tournament.
