Houston Christian Women’s Golf Team Competes at Golf Iconic Classic, Finishes Round 1 in Sixth Place

Houston Christian University’s women’s golf team demonstrated a strong start at the Golf Iconic Classic in Las Cruces, New Mexico, concluding the first round tied for sixth place with a team score of 3-under par. The tournament, hosted at the New Mexico State University Golf Course, is currently led by Boise State at 12-under, followed by San Diego State at 6-under and Long Beach State at 5-under.

The Houston Christian team’s performance was highlighted by individual successes, demonstrating a collective commitment to competitive golf. The team’s overall score reflects a promising beginning to the three-day tournament.

Makmanee Leads with impressive Round

Natcha Makmanee spearheaded the Huskies’ efforts with a remarkable 4-under par 68, securing a tie for fourth place individually. Makmanee began with a birdie on the first hole and then capitalized on the par-5 third with an eagle,followed by another birdie on the fifth,finishing the front nine at 4-under. She added another birdie on the 16th hole before completing her round with a par on the 18th. “Her composed and confident round set the tone for HCU’s day,” according to team reports.

Stewart and Hendershott Contribute Solid Scores

Alyssa Stewart followed closely behind with a strong 2-under par 70, tying her for 13th place. Stewart maintained consistent play throughout the round, making the turn at 1-under and adding birdies on the 11th, 12th, and 14th holes. Despite a couple of late bogeys, her accurate approach shots and putting kept her within striking distance of the leaders.

Hailey Hendershott posted a 1-over par 73, placing her in 40th position. After a challenging start, she rebounded with a composed back nine, highlighted by a birdie on the par-3 17th, finishing the inward half with an even 35.

Pro tip: – Collegiate golf scoring typically uses a combination of the best four out of five individual scores per team, per round. This emphasizes team depth.

Pihlajamaki and Churchill Round Out the Lineup

Sara Pihlajamaki carded a 2-over par 74, tying her for 53rd place. The junior maintained a steady pace, securing a birdie on the 10th hole to balance out bogeys on the 7th, 9th, 12th, and 17th holes.

Serena Churchill finished with a 4-over par 76, tying her for 77th. Churchill demonstrated resilience after a difficult front nine, finishing strong with a birdie on the 17th and a solid 37 on her closing stretch.
