April 19th is laundry hanging day. But how do you dry laundry properly – inside, outside, in the dryer?

“Hanging the laundry out is usually better, especially if the laundry can dry outside. A study by the Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences in Kleve came to the conclusion that the reduction in the number of germs when drying outdoors is greater than when drying in a tumble dryer, due to the ultraviolet light,” explains

dr Bernd Glassl (58), Head of Household Care at the Body Care and Detergent Association. V. (IKW). Added to this is the wear and tear of the laundry in the dryer due to friction and high temperatures, as well as the energy consumption.

Hanging up laundry outdoors is particularly worthwhile when it comes to saving energy.

“If you only dry the laundry outside, zero kilowatt hours are consumed, because then nature provides the energy for free through wind and sun. On the other hand, if you dry your laundry in a gas-heated room from October to April, you use about 133 kWh per year, mainly due to heat loss during ventilation.”

A heat pump dryer, on the other hand, requires between 1.5 and 2 kWh per drying cycle, a condenser dryer 3.5 to 4 kWh for a model with a capacity of 7 kg.

By the way, laundry can also be dried outside in the cold. After it initially freezes, the ice immediately becomes gaseous after a short time without having become water again beforehand.”
