Hytale on Steam: Will It Ever Happen?

Hytale Launches Exclusively Through Hypixel Launcher, Steam Release Remains Uncertain

After a decade in development, the highly anticipated game Hytale is now available – but not on Steam. Developer Hypixel has opted for an exclusive launch through its own dedicated application, sparking questions about a potential future release on Valve’s dominant platform. Here’s a breakdown of the reasoning and what the future may hold.

Why Skip Steam at Launch?

According to a statement from a senior executive producer, Hypixel deliberately chose to bypass Steam initially to foster a closer relationship with its core fanbase. The team believes a Steam launch at this stage could have resulted in a “flood of cold first impressions that could overcorrect the game’s direction.”

This decision isn’t indicative of a desire to avoid scrutiny, however. The studio emphasized its openness to “honest, negative criticism,” noting that the development team itself has been “very critical” of the game throughout its creation. Releasing through its own launcher allows Hypixel to prioritize feedback from players already invested in the game’s development, ensuring the initial stages of the game’s evolution are guided by informed perspectives.

Could Hytale Come to Steam Later?

The possibility of a future Steam release hasn’t been ruled out. The executive producer acknowledged Steam’s value as both a “great platform and marketing tool,” but stated that Hypixel “might never need” to utilize it. Conversely, a Steam release remains a possibility. “This doesn’t mean Hytale will never be on Steam; right now, we don’t see the need for it, as we want to keep our launch closer to our community,” the producer explained.

A key factor influencing this decision is Steam’s current limitations regarding modding support. Hypixel intends to engage with Valve to explore potential solutions, as robust modding capabilities are a central component of the Hytale experience.

Console Release Confirmed, But Timing Unspecified

While Hytale is currently exclusive to PC, Hypixel has confirmed plans to bring the game to consoles at some point in the future, though a specific timeline has not been announced.

The Power of Steam and Alternative Launch Strategies

Steam remains the preeminent digital storefront for PC games, boasting millions of daily users and a vast catalog of titles. While its sheer size can present discoverability challenges for smaller developers, it also offers unparalleled reach. Valve takes a percentage of game sales, a cost Hypixel avoids by utilizing its own launcher.

The decision to launch independently echoes strategies employed by other major game developers. Minecraft, a significant inspiration for Hytale, is also absent from Steam, while Riot Games’ League of Legends utilizes its own dedicated launcher. Even industry giants like EA and Ubisoft have experimented with removing titles from Steam, citing business concerns, before ultimately returning.

Despite the emergence of competitors like GOG and the Epic Games Store, none have yet matched Steam’s scale or influence.
