Hyundai Department Store Courts Chinese Tourists with Apple Pay and K-Beauty Experiences
Seoul, South Korea – Hyundai Department Store is bolstering its appeal to independent Chinese tourists with the introduction of Apple Pay support and immersive cultural experiences, aiming to capitalize on the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday. The move signifies a strategic effort to cater to the evolving preferences of a key demographic and enhance the overall shopping experience.
Expanding Mobile Payment Options
Hyundai Department Store announced on Thursday, January 13th, that it will begin accepting Apple Pay at all of its department stores and outlets nationwide starting Friday, January 14th. This initiative is a direct partnership with UnionPay, China’s leading credit card company and the provider of Apple Pay services within China. Hyundai Department Store is the first domestic department store to officially integrate Apple Pay through this collaboration.
This integration allows Chinese visitors to make purchases seamlessly using Apple Pay, eliminating the need for physical credit cards. To incentivize adoption, the department store is offering discounts of up to 12% on all purchases made with Apple Pay through January of next year.
Targeting the Tech-Savvy Chinese Consumer
According to a company release, the decision to prioritize Apple Pay stems from its popularity among China’s younger demographic. “Due to the characteristics of the Chinese 2030 generation who are familiar with Apple Pay, the satisfaction level of young customers is expected to increase,” stated a senior official. “This will be an opportunity to increase the convenience of payment that can be experienced during the actual shopping process.”
Hyundai Department Store plans to expand its mobile payment offerings beyond Apple Pay, with the potential addition of Huawei Pay and Xiaomi Pay as early as June. This expansion reflects a commitment to providing a comprehensive suite of payment options tailored to Chinese consumer preferences.
Immersive K-Beauty and K-Fashion Experiences
Beyond payment convenience, Hyundai Department Store is investing in experiential retail to attract and engage Chinese tourists. A dedicated pop-up space will open on the 6th floor of The Hyundai Seoul in the first half of the year, showcasing the best of K-beauty and K-fashion.
The pop-up will feature interactive programs designed to enhance the shopping experience, including:
- Personal Color Analysis: A service to help customers identify colors that complement their skin tone.
- T-shirt Customization: An opportunity for shoppers to design and create their own personalized T-shirts.
Reaching Tourists Through Digital Channels
Recognizing the importance of digital platforms in travel planning, Hyundai Department Store will increase the accessibility of information about its offerings. The department store plans to promote The Hyundai Seoul’s pop-ups and food and beverage options on popular travel platforms, including restaurant information apps and flight and accommodation reservation apps frequently used by Chinese tourists.
“We expect that domestic visits by individual Chinese tourists will increase around the Lunar New Year holiday,” a Hyundai Department Store official said. “We will increase accessibility to shopping information…on travel platforms.”
This multifaceted approach – combining convenient mobile payment options with engaging cultural experiences and targeted digital marketing – positions Hyundai Department Store to effectively capture a growing share of the lucrative Chinese tourism market.
