US Bets Big on Nuclear Power to fuel the AI Revolution

Artificial intelligence demands an ever-increasing energy supply, a need that intermittent renewable sources alone cannot reliably meet. In response,the United States is forging ahead with a bold plan – a massive,privately-funded nuclear energy complex in Texas designed to power the next generation of AI data centers.

The escalating energy demands of artificial intelligence are prompting a significant shift in power generation strategies. Training and operating complex AI models requires immense computing power, delivered by thousands of chips operating continuously.These chips not only consume vast amounts of electricity but also generate significant heat, necessitating robust and energy-intensive cooling systems. As AI capabilities expand exponentially, data centers require a stable and uninterrupted energy supply – known as baseload power – traditionally provided by sources like nuclear and combined cycle gas.

A “HyperGrid” Campus Takes Shape in Texas

US energy developer Fermi America, co-founded by former Energy Secretary and texas Governor Rick Perry, is spearheading the project, dubbed “YellowTexas.” This isn’t simply connecting to the existing power grid; it’s the creation of a “HyperGrid campus” – a private and autonomous network operating “behind-the-meter.” This configuration ensures a constant and massive flow of energy, critical for the 24/7 operation of AI systems.

The planned energy mix is unprecedented in its scale and integration:

  • Nuclear: The largest nuclear complex in the United States, developed in partnership with Hyundai.
  • Gas: The nation’s largest combined cycle gas project.
  • Renewables: Solar systems and battery storage systems (BESS) will supplement the primary power sources.
  • Public Network: Integration with the public grid will serve as a backup and for supplemental power.

Geotechnical work is already underway, with the first gigawatt of power – likely from non-nuclear sources – expected to come online by the end of 2026.

Hyundai Joins Forces on Nuclear Development

On june 17, Fermi America submitted its Combined Operating License Application (COLA) to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission for the construction of four Westinghouse AP1000 reactors, and the application was accepted for review in record time. Construction is slated to begin in 2026,with the first reactor anticipated to be operational by 2032,adding 4 gigawatts of energy with a significant boost to baseload capacity.

This is where Hyundai Engineering & Construction (E&C) enters the picture. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed, entrusting the South Korean firm with joint planning, basic design (FEED), and future implementation (EPC) of the nuclear plant. While the reactors are designed by Westinghouse, the actual construction and implementation will largely be handled by Hyundai.
