One of the unavoidable requirements to collect unemployment is to register as a job seeker, and renew the claim while receiving the benefit. This last procedure, which has always been popularly known as “sealing the unemployment card”, continues to be mandatory, although the traditional card has been replaced by more digital procedures.

The State Public Employment Service (SEPE) warns that it will suspend the payment of benefits during the periods in which the beneficiary does not appear as registered in its database.

It will be resumed from the date on which the new registration is accredited, “unless it is appropriate to maintain the suspension of the benefit or its termination for any of the legally provided reasons.”

To make the new registration as a job seeker official, the beneficiary must appear at the SEPE offices with an official document in which they must fill in their personal data.

In addition to registering and maintaining the status of job seeker, you must comply other requirements If you want to collect unemployment:

-Contribute for the unemployment contingency.

-Provide public employment services with the documentation and information established by regulation.

-Participate in employment programs or in “professional promotion, training or retraining” actions, whether established by public services or collaborating placement agencies. You must also accept the “suitable” placement offered to you.

-Comply with the activity agreement. This is a written agreement between the public employment services and the worker. It includes the rights and obligations of both parties to increase the employability of the unemployed.

-Actively seek employment, and “participate in actions to increase employment possibilities” indicated by public employment services, “within an insertion itinerary.”

-Request the withdrawal of unemployment benefits when situations arise that cause their suspension or termination. Or because the requirements to collect them are no longer met.

-Return the amounts that the SEPE has paid unduly.

Sanctions

Failure to comply with any of the requirements will result in a minor, serious or very serious infraction, as the case may be, with its corresponding sanctions. Failure to maintain registration as a job seeker falls into the first typology.

The first violation will mean the loss of one month of benefits, which will be two and three months for the second and third time the regulations are broken respectively. The fourth violation will result in the termination of benefits.

The SEPE clarifies that these scales will be applied “from the first infraction” and when, between a minor infraction and the previous one, no more than 365 days have passed”, regardless of its typology.
