Senator Iván Cepeda spoke of the lack of commitment in the search for a national agreement, a central promise during the electoral campaign.
During a forum organized by the En Marcha party, Cepeda expressed his doubts about the effectiveness of government policies in reaching consensus comprehensive that addresses the economic, social and political challenges of Colombia. He argued that, despite President Petro’s promises and proposals in this regard, deficiencies have persisted in both consistency and strength of efforts to reach agreements at the national level.
«There is a criticism that I consider valid for the current Governmentand it has not demonstrated sufficient perseverance in achieving that agreement, despite the fact that the president has stated that this is the purpose of this Government. Why do we call ourselves the Historical Pact if not for that?Cepeda questioned, referring to the name of the government coalition and its supposed commitment to consensus and national unity.
“There is something there that is not there, as well as the idea of a National Constituent Assembly. I don’t agree that we are here for that today, but we agree with agreeing on the basics,” said Cepeda.

Furthermore, the senator pointed out an apparent contradiction in the current Government’s approach. «You cannot do two things at the same time: be completely radical in Congress, in the streets, in the political debate, and seek national agreement. There is something there that doesn’t add up,” he commented.
On the other hand, Cepeda denounced the obstacles found on the path to justice and peace, especially with regard to the subjugation of criminal organizations. Recalling previous efforts with General Naranjo to facilitate this process, he noted that “there were very powerful forces that opposed this and continue to oppose it,” suggesting the existence of deep-seated interests that make the country’s pacification difficult.
