«Luca Travaglia? Troubled in name and in fact. He is a gruff, distrustful, grumpy, even repulsive man of few words”, begins Edoardo Leo, protagonist of the crime comedy television series, “Il clandestino”. An investigator in Milan”, on Rai 1 from 8 April in 12 episodes. A Rai Fiction production with Fulvio and Paola Lucisano, directed by Rolando Ravello.
Former chief inspector of anti-terrorism, loved and respected by all, Travaglia abandoned the police after his partner Khadija (Lavinia Longhi) of Libyan origin, with whom he was madly in love, lost her life in an attack: a tragic story in which it seems that the woman is inexplicably involved. «My character, destroyed by pain, decides to move to Milan – continues the actor – He is so destroyed internally that he becomes an illegal immigrant, a stranger to himself, drowning his ghosts in alcohol abuse. He is content to work as a bouncer and bodyguard, but then he will make himself available to other illegal immigrants.”
A post-expo Milan, where the “drink” one intersects with the multi-ethnic one. An expensive Miliano, where Travaglia finds limited accommodation in the garage of the house of Palitha (Hassani Shapi), a Sri Lankan with a thousand resources who suggests that he embark on an unlikely activity: a “clandestine” detective agency, that is, at the service of those has difficulty with law enforcement or those who are too visible and don’t want publicity. Thanks to this strange job offer, the ex-policeman not only manages to escape from the slavery of alcohol, but goes back to doing the only job he is capable of doing: being a policeman.
«I accepted this proposal – continues Leo – because for the first time we are talking about illegal immigrants without taking sides. It shows why certain people find themselves in certain situations, even if nothing is as it seems. Travaglia has lost everything and is closed in on himself, but he manages to change his life by listening to others. Because – he adds – there is only one way to escape loneliness and rediscover one’s emotions: slipping into those of others. I like characters who have to rebuild themselves.” Grumpy, rejecting: unpleasant? «Travaglia doesn’t speak much – replies Leo – which is quite strange for a policeman, if I think of Montalbano or Rocco Schiavone. He speaks little and sometimes raises his hands, but his humanity comes out precisely from his introversion.”
Among the other performers of the series, created by Ugo Ripamonti and Renato Sannio, Fausto Maria Sciarappa, Stefano Guerrieri, Mattia Mele, Michele Savoia, Alice Arcuri. And with this fiction Leo celebrates 30 years of career: «I started in April 1994 with a Rai series». But the actor does not give up on the theater: since April 12th he has been on stage at the Brancaccio with his monologue «I’ll tell you a story», with music by Jonis Bascir. «I never leave the stage, where I made my debut a long time ago directed by Gigi Proietti in The Drama of Jealousy. I always feel the need to reclaim the relationship with the live audience.”
