Iconic IP: Scaling Potential & Future Growth

Blizzard Shifts Focus to Existing Franchises, Aims for Consistent Annual Releases

Blizzard Entertainment, under the leadership of President Johanna Faries, is prioritizing the expansion of its established intellectual property (IP) over the development of new game worlds. This strategic shift comes as the company navigates its second year under Microsoft’s ownership and seeks to maintain a consistent release schedule of major titles.

A New Era Under Microsoft

Johanna Faries ascended to the presidency of Blizzard in 2014, following a three-year tenure as general manager of Call of Duty. A key early achievement under her leadership was the restoration of a partnership with NetEase, effectively reopening the crucial Chinese market after a period of disruption. As Faries approaches her second anniversary in the role, she has articulated a vision centered on maximizing the potential of Blizzard’s existing franchises.

“We have iconic IP and in many ways it still has a lot of room to scale,” Faries stated in a recent interview with Bloomberg. “So let’s focus in on the cards we have to play. It doesn’t mean we won’t go into new places and territories, but for right now, let’s home in on all the iconic stature that we have in the tank for Blizzard.”

Profitability and the Pressure to Perform

Analysts suggest that Blizzard is likely facing pressure from Microsoft to achieve a substantial profit margin, potentially around 30%, mirroring the targets set for the Xbox division. While Faries declined to directly address this financial expectation, the emphasis on leveraging existing IP aligns with a strategy focused on minimizing risk and maximizing return on investment.

Despite the cautious approach, the possibility of future installments in beloved franchises remains. One observer noted that for fans hoping for a StarCraft 3, this renewed focus on established titles offers a glimmer of hope.

A Consistent Release Cadence

Blizzard intends to release at least one or two major games annually. “Let’s look at it as a portfolio,” Faries explained, “and let’s make sure that every—let’s say calendar year—there are at least one to two really big things that Blizzard is pumping out. And if we can configure our slate accordingly, which we believe we have done, we’ll be able to stay top of mind leveraging the multi-franchise opportunities that we have.”

Upcoming Releases and Events

The immediate future for Blizzard looks packed. World of Warcraft: Midnight, potentially the largest expansion in the history of the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), is scheduled for release on March 2. Diablo 4 will receive its next expansion, Lord of Hatred, on April 28.

Beyond these major releases, 2024 will also mark the 10th anniversary of Overwatch, and will see the return of Blizzcon, the company’s annual gaming convention, after a hiatus.
