Idris Elba Knighted, Ellie Goulding and Cynthia Erivo Honored in U.K. New Year Honors List
The U.K.’s New Year Honors List, released on tuesday, December 30, recognizes a diverse range of individuals for their contributions to British society, with prominent actors Idris Elba, singer ellie Goulding, and performer Cynthia Erivo among the celebrated figures in entertainment and music.
The King’s annual list bestows accolades ranging from knighthoods and damehoods – the highest honors before being named Sir or Dame – to CBEs (Commander), OBEs (Officer), and MBEs (Member). A total of 1,157 recipients across politics, sport, entertainment, science, and othre fields are acknowledged this year.
Idris Elba receives a knighthood for his extensive charity work, particularly his dedication to supporting young people. The actor, known for his roles in The Wire and Luther, launched an anti-knife crime campaign and co-founded the Elba Hope Foundation with his wife, Sabrina. The foundation provides grants to organizations operating in the U.K., the U.S., and Africa. Elba’s journey was considerably aided early in his career by a £1,500 grant from the Prince’s Trust, which enabled him to attend the National Youth Music Theatre program. He has since become a multifaceted artist, also performing as DJ Big Driis at festivals worldwide.
Alongside Elba, Cynthia Erivo and Ellie Goulding are appointed MBEs.Erivo, celebrated for her work in drama and the arts – including her upcoming role in Wicked – is recognized for her broad contributions to the performing arts. Goulding’s honour acknowledges not only her musical career but also her advocacy for biodiversity and climate action, including her work as a global environmental ambassador with the United Nations.

Composer Max Richter is appointed a CBE just weeks before the release of his original score for the critically acclaimed film Hamnet, directed by Chloe Zhao and starring Paul Mescal. Scottish singer Eve Graham, a founding member of The New seekers and known for the 1972 hit “I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing,” receives an MBE for her services to music.
Industry leadership is also recognized, with Karen Ruth Emanuel, founder and CEO of Key Production, receiving an MBE for her services to music. Philip Patterson, a former sector specialist at the Department for Business and Trade, is similarly honored with an OBE for his work supporting the music industry. Janet Fischer, chair of Live Music Now, receives an MBE for her dedication to both music and charitable endeavors.
