The Electoral Institute of Mexico City (IECM) is promoting informed voting in the campaigns in the country’s capital, with a view to the election on June 2, stated electoral advisor Mauricio Huesca.

In an interview with DEBATE, the electoral advisor also highlighted that There is a sector in which the IECM is very interested so that your vote is reasoned: Young who will cast their vote for the first time in 2024.

He explained that in Mexico City there is a nominal list of about 260 thousand young people who for the first time will cast their vote on June 2, to elect head of government, mayors and local deputies, in addition to the President of the Republic and senators.

“We will be with strategies to stimulate and promote the vote because we have seen that these prime voters participate in about 70 percent of their universe, so we are very interested in this participation not being done in a manner that is, let’s say frivolous or dogmatic, but rather that it be done in an informed manner,” he pointed out.

Mauricio Huesca also stressed that there is a campaign promotion of extraterritorial voting, and pointed out that there is a registry of about 52 thousand people who will vote from different parts of the United States, Europe, Asia and Africa.

The electoral official pointed out that voting will begin approximately May 20, in three dimensions: electronic voting, in-person voting and postal voting.

“We will begin to issue and receive this vote from the first week of May,” specified Huesca, who insisted on the promotion of informed voting.

The counselor highlighted that more than 50 debates were organized between the candidates of the different forces, which includes the three among the candidates for the Head of Government of Mexico CityClara Brugada, James Taboada, and Solomon Chertorivski.

The intention is that in all debates, rather than disqualification, there is a confrontation of ideas, contrasts and that the candidates address the problems of Mexico City on different topics and thus encourage an informed vote.

Propaganda electoral

On another topic, Councilor Huesca mentioned that in principle they were concerned about the advertising in urban equipment, which although not prohibited by law, conflicts with the issue of outdoor advertising in Mexico City.

He considered it necessary to specify clear rules for the candidates to place or remove the adversaries’ propaganda to place their own.

The Outdoor Advertising Law conflicts with the electoral law, because while the second allows advertising to be placed in certain spaces, the first prohibits it.

However, Huesca noted, both laws agree that there can be propaganda on billboards and in Mupis, that is, urban equipment with comprehensive advertising that exists throughout the city, whether on public transportation or other areas designed to serve the community. but at the same time they offer a space for advertising.

What the IECM has done is try to harmonize both situations, said the electoral advisor.

He recalled that there are restrictions so that there cannot be withdrawal or mutilation of electoral propaganda, but they are no longer the responsibility of the IECM; however, the Institute promotes respect and civility between the parties.
