In the current era of energy transformation, the fragility of the US dollar is highlighted. Its weakness is partly associated with the United States’ lack of control over sometimes scarce metallic resources, which we often overlook, but which can have a great impact in the fight for global hegemony. The role of these metals cuts across technology, the arms race and directly impacts the monetary sphere. The control of critical and strategic metals, including rare earths and the so-called “green metals” is a key element for the dominance of the dollar. Although the US currency has enjoyed the privilege of being the reference currency, a symbol of global power, today it faces great geopolitical challenges derived mainly from the energy transition and the competition to lead it.
