The term sovereignty is used very often now. There is a misconception that sovereignty is about making independent decisions, but sovereignty is primarily about managing the territory. The term is a result of the Westphalian system, meaning: you are sovereign if you control your territory, hence the wording: sovereign territory, historian and specialist in historical demography Mikael Malkhasyan told Aysor.am’s “Objective” program.

“The example of Ethiopia is very telling. Haile Selassie lost the territory of the country, he was making decisions here and there, signing decrees, now the question is whether signing a decree by his own decision is sovereignty or managing the territory of your country. Therefore, sovereignty is first about managing one’s own territories, being able to keep them intact.”

According to the historian, efforts are made in the Armenian propaganda speech to associate sovereignty only with making a decision, but if Armenia is left with only a building, we make completely independent decisions in that building and say: look, what we did to Paris, Moscow, Washington, will that be sovereignty? Some people, experts are constantly talking about the Helsinki Final Act, referring to sovereignty, territorial integrity, but no one asks: when the territories of Yugoslavia were changed, Czechoslovakia was disappearing, the Soviet Union was collapsing, why did Kosovo not emerge then? remember the Helsinki Final Act, how many countries have not signed that act and how many new countries there are.
