The industry is lacking orders, which means the shortage of skilled workers there is also decreasing. Things look different in other industries.

The shortage of skilled workers among companies in Germany has continued to decrease. According to an Ifo survey of around 9,000 companies, 36 percent currently have too few qualified workers. Six months ago it was almost 39 percent, a year ago almost 44 percent. “The weakening economy is reducing the demand for skilled workers in the short term,” said Ifo expert Klaus Wohlrabe in Munich on Wednesday.

Due to the lack of orders in the industry, the shortage of skilled workers there has been declining for more than a year and is now at 28 percent. Even in the retail and construction sectors, only a little more than a quarter of companies complain about a lack of qualified workers.

Wohlrabe: The fundamental problem remains

In the hotel industry and logistics, on the other hand, every second company is desperately looking for specialist staff. Among lawyers, tax consultants and auditors, 69 percent cannot find the employees they need.

The fundamental problem remains, said Wohlrabe. If the economy in Germany picks up speed, the shortage will increase. The withdrawal of the baby boomer generation from working life will exacerbate the problem in the next few years.
