Iko Uwais: ‘MRI’ Hospital Siege Thriller Announced

Iko Uwais to Star in Hospital Siege Thriller “MRI

The Indonesian martial arts superstar will lead the cast of “MRI,” a high-stakes action thriller set to launch at the American Film Market next month.

Martial arts icon Iko Uwais, renowned for his roles in films like “The Raid,” “Mile 22,” and “Expend4bles,” is set to headline “MRI,” a new hospital siege thriller. The project will reunite Uwais with director Liam O’Donnell (“Alphas”), marking their third collaboration. International sales rights have been acquired by K5 Intl., led by Daniel Baur, with plans to introduce the film to buyers at the American Film Market in November.

A Familiar Partnership

O’Donnell and Uwais previously worked together on 2017’s “Beyond Skyline” and the forthcoming “Skyline: Warpath.” This established creative synergy clearly influenced the decision to collaborate once more. According to a company release, O’Donnell stated, “Iko’s sheer charisma, soulful depth and insane work ethic makes him every director’s dream.” He further added that a positive experience with Strong Island on “Alphas” led him to believe “MRI” would be the ideal project for all involved to “take things to the next level.”

Plot Details and Creative Team

The film’s narrative centers on a hardened hitman, portrayed by Uwais, grappling with a fractured family life and a debilitating knee injury. While undergoing a routine MRI scan, the hospital is unexpectedly overrun by a ruthless gang. He finds himself as the sole individual capable of rescuing the daughter of a powerful crime boss – the gang’s target – and restoring order, despite his physical limitations. The script was penned by Russell Hainline, known for his work on the Netflix series “Hot Frosty.”

The production will be a joint effort between Strong Island and Uwais Pictures, with Christopher Tuffin of Strong Island (“Freelance,” “Canary Black,” “Alphas”) and Ryan Santoso of Uwais Pictures producing. K5 Intl.’s Daniel Baur, alongside Amanda Delaplaine and Chris Ochs, will serve as executive producers.

A Return to Classic Action

Producers believe “MRI” taps into a growing demand for Asian-themed content while simultaneously offering a nostalgic nod to the classic martial arts films of the 1970s, reimagined for a contemporary audience. One analyst noted that the project’s appeal lies in its ability to bridge generational tastes. Tuffin’s recent successes include “Peppermint,” “Canary Black,” “Freelance,” and “Sound of Freedom,” with upcoming projects like the action film “Alphas” and the period thriller “The Butler” (starring Jean Reno and Tom Hollander) also in the pipeline.

Uwais Expands His Creative Horizon

Uwais is increasingly recognized not only for his on-screen prowess – showcased in films like “The Raid,” “The Raid 2,” and “The Night Comes for Us” – but also for his expanding role behind the camera. He has established Uwais Team, a dedicated action choreography outfit, and co-founded Uwais Pictures with Santoso. Their inaugural production, “Ikatan Darah,” premiered to critical acclaim at Fantastic Fest, and Uwais’ directorial debut, “Timur,” is scheduled to premiere in Indonesia on December 18th.

Principal photography for “MRI” is slated to begin in Jakarta early in the new year. Uwais is represented by Gersh and Vault Entertainment, while O’Donnell is represented by Strong Island, Sentient Entertainment, Innovative Artists Entertainment, and Miloknay Weiner. Hainline is represented by Game Plan Media.
