It will be presented in Molfetta on 6 November by the author Rosario Balestrieri

On November 6, 2021, at the historic bookshop “il Ghigno” in Molfetta, the Neapolitan ornithologist and popularizer Rosario Balestrieri, will present his book Il cuore sul Lago which tells a story of special friendship and explores the theme of homogenity in nature: dedicated to the victims of homophobia, says Balestrieri. The project in collaboration with the Terrae Environmental Studies and Education Center. The book is divided into two parts: the first is a romantic tale that helps the little ones (and others) to approach delicate issues such as homophobia and homogenitoriality. The story unfolds in Australia, the story of a couple of black swans who defends their brood from the dangers of everyday life: upon the death of mother Mery, father Victor will discover a special friendship with Omar, who will become adoptive parent of the six babies, forming what today would be called a de facto couple. With a clear and delicate language, Balestrieri introduces young readers into the maze of the universe of sexuality. And it does so by drawing on what happens between the complex gears of the world of nature.

Homosexuality in nature explained by science

The second part of the book is enriched by a popular scientific study on the issues of homosexuality in nature and adoptions both within the same species and between different species, with an extensive scientific bibliography of reference. A short essay that does not fail to thrill the older ones, rejecting the unnatural expression with which homosexual tendencies are still stigmatized. A few examples? In the black swans protagonists of the fable, 13-20% of a population on average made up of couples made up of two males. Homosexual couples, as a rule, provide for the interaction with a female for a short duration, the time necessary to fertilize and lay the eggs which are subsequently managed by the two males, who hatch them until the hatching of the young which then take care of until the fledging. . And then there is the most famous case of the penguins, in which male homosexuality was found in the majority of species with rates ranging from 10 to 20% of the population. In many documented cases, male pairs have adopted abandoned eggs, successfully hatched them and raised the young until its independence. An important project in the days when the Italian Parliament rejected the Zan Bill, provoking, in many squares of the country, the demonstrations of the LGBT community and supporters of the law. The publishing project created in collaboration with the Federico II University of Naples and sponsored by the Department of Equal Opportunities of the Municipality of Naples.
