Riyadh: Fifteen thousand illegal immigrants have been arrested in different parts of Saudi Arabia in the past week. During the week, 14,470 people were arrested for various offenses. The arrests were made during raids by Saudi security agencies as part of a crackdown on illegal immigrants and those living in the country in violation of visa and labor laws.

The Saudi Interior Ministry said 14,470 people were arrested between February 3 and 9. The foreigners were arrested for violating visa and labor laws and staying in the country illegally. The Home Ministry said the inspections were carried out by various security forces and the Directorate General of Passports (Javasat) and the joint inspection would be intensified in the coming days.

Most expats are arrested for violating residency laws. A total of 7,708 people were arrested for violating residence laws. The home ministry said 4,971 people had been arrested for violating border security laws and 1,791 for labor law violations. The security forces arrested 168 people in the border areas while trying to enter the country through illegal means. Of these, 65 per cent are Ethiopians, 31 per cent are Yemenis and the remaining four per cent are from other countries.

Authorities have warned that those who commit such offenses could face up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to 10 million riyals. So far, 99,499 people have been arrested in Saudi Arabia for violating the law. Of these, 88,177 were males and 11,322 were females. The Interior Ministry said 87,424 people arrested for violating the law had been handed over to the relevant embassies for correction of travel documents before being deported.
