Loved or hated, the opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup at the Stade de France had the merit of getting people talking. Deemed “too cliché” by some, “magnificent” by others, it widely divided public opinion, which deeply affected the person who imagined and directed it, Jean Dujardin.

On Instagram, the French actor, for the first time, returned this Thursday to the criticism that fell on his show. “I’m falling backwards,” he first wrote. I never would have thought that my participation in the opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup would trigger such a flood of political and media comments… We wanted it to be beautiful, we wanted it to be festive, we wanted it to be is amused to imagine it, we all got involved together, volunteers, craftsmen, artists, happy to prepare it while thinking of the pleasure of everything. We wanted to celebrate our country, our know-how and the history of rugby. »

“There was such good will”

Based on France in the 1950s, this ceremony was especially considered “old-fashioned” by its detractors. “The outdated France of the 1950s? It was precisely in 1954 that France celebrated its first victory over the New Zealanders, he railed. France rancid? An opening ceremony is always the presentation to the rest of the world of the country where the celebrated event takes place. We are indeed also the country of the beret, of gastronomy, of culture, of education, no offense to some… The second degree that I have always liked to use has not been understood and I regret it. »

Jean Dujardin expressed his deep regret at seeing this ceremony “oppose” rather than “bring together”. “We should certainly have remembered that our country is widely criticized for being contentious and grumpy,” he wrote. Too bad we couldn’t escape it when there was such good will. »

The Oscar-winning actor still closed his message in a positive way, by encouraging the XV of France. “I wanted it to be a ceremony of open-mindedness, sharing and joy. I keep this beautiful emotion warm. Come on, Blues,” he concluded.
