Images obtained by CNN show several areas of Porto Alegre after record high”>Salgado Filho Airport, in Porto Alegre, taken by water from the flood that hits the capital of Rio Grande do Sul. Landing and take-off operations have been suspended since Friday (3).
This Monday (6), the concessionaire Fraport, which manages the terminal, issued a note to the airline sector informing that airport operations are suspended until May 30th.
Photos taken last Sunday (5) show that water took over the runway and even reached the part designated for hangars. Inside the terminal, the water level reached the escalator steps and made access to the Federal Police station unfeasible. Seats were also compromised.
In a note released this Monday (6), the Brazilian Association of Airlines (Abear) reinforced the information that Salgado FIlho Airport is closed for an indefinite period.
“ABEAR members canceled flights to and/or from Porto Alegre and relaxed rescheduling and refund rules. Passengers must contact the airline to reschedule or refund tickets to and/or from the capital of Rio Grande do Sul,” says the statement.
Other airports in Rio Grande do Sul continue to operate. This is the case of Passo Fundo, Caxias do Sul, Pelotas and Santo Ângelo airports. However, operations in these locations may be affected due to weather conditions.
