Weekend Transition: From Showers to Sunshine – With a Catch
Saturday, December 6th, marks a turning point, with the last vestiges of the previous disturbance giving way to clearer skies. While the North and Central Italy will enjoy increasing sunshine, only lightly disturbed by high clouds, the South will still experience lingering showers, partially obscuring the sun.
Higher elevations of the Alps,between Valle d’Aosta and Upper Piedmont,could experience light snow or rain above 1,700-2,100 meters.Isolated showers may persist between Reggio Calabria and Messina in the South, but these are expected to diminish quickly. Fog will become more persistent in the Po Valley and central inland valleys overnight.

The anticyclone will trap cold,humid air in the Po Valley and central inland basins,creating a stark contrast with the warmth experienced at higher elevations and in the South. “While in the mountains and in the Center-South you will be in shirtsleeves, the Po Valley and the internal basins of the Center could remain trapped in a blanket of cold humidity,” one analyst noted. Low clouds and persistent fog will keep these areas gray and chilly.
The Thermal Paradox: High Temperatures at Altitude
A key feature of this weather pattern is the dramatic rise in the Thermal Zero – the altitude at which the temperature reaches 0°C.It is expected to climb above 3,000-3,300 meters, peaking at 3,500 meters. This means temperatures will remain above freezing even at significant elevations in the Alps and Apennines.
This phenomenon is driven by adiabatic compression – as high pressure pushes air downwards,it compresses and heats up. this warmth remains at altitude,while the heavier,cold air settles in the valleys. .

A senior official stated, “The weather itself is an amplifier, but the root cause is anthropic emissions – traffic, heating, and industry – that remain trapped on the ground.” This poses a particular risk to the elderly, children, and those with respiratory conditions, potentially leading to increased emergency room visits and exacerbating flu symptoms.
